Flea Market

Flea Market

The Anjuna "flea market" traces its origin to the Hippie Revolution of the 60's. Young Westerners just threw off Victorian customs and dress and landed in Anjuna-Calangute Belt with their haversacks. Hippies who were running out of money would sell off their personal effects......everything ranging from "foreign" guitars, electronic equipment to jewelry and jeans to anyone interested. Thus began the infamous "flea" market at Anjuna.

Today this beachside market still attracts tourists, but the sellers are mostly from Kashmir, Tibet, Gujarat, Rajasthan, or Karnataka selling handicrafts, brassware, semi-precious stones, clothes, fancy knives, hammocks, and bedspreads. A few Goan stalls sell music CD's, foodstuffs. A number of foreigners are also among the sellers vending Italian Pizzas, German pastries or Israeli or Russian cuisine. A few may also vend their belongings. Attire for the beach market is essentially beachwear & skimpy. To avoid the roadside traffic jams, John takes you to Anjuna Flea Market by boat adding ample thrill to the trip. The boat ride begins from Baga beach and circles the cape of Anjuna hillock to reach you straight to Anjuna Beach where the market is located. Chilled beers are provided on the boat.

This weekly tourists market is also known by other names such as, "Wednesday Weekly Market", "Flea Market" or as "Anjuna Flea Market". Not to be missed market especially if you are shopping for souvenirs & handicrafts from all over India. The Anjuna Flea Market is one of the most unusual, gigantically huge and most colorful markets of Goa. Even if you are not in shopping, the Anjuna flea market is the place to be on Wednesday's in Goa.

Anjuna is a beach village situated off the North of Goa; Anjuna became the place of escape for Western 'hippies' arriving in the early 60's. On running out of money but still wanting to stay longer, these early adventure travelers sold off their personal effects, most "imported" or "foreign", from guitars to jewelry and jeans to anyone interested. Thus began the infamous 'flea' market at Anjuna. Located on the sandy stretch overlooking the waves of the Arabian Sea, what started as an open-air hippie exchange has become one of the most popular attractions for hanging around or shopping for backpackers, travelers and all tourists.

Present day Anjuna Flea Market has more than 2000 plus participants mostly Kashmiri, Gujarathi, Rajasthani, the Lamani tribe from Karnataka and Tibetans who claim to be refugees from Tibet. There are few Goan stalls, most of them managing tea, coffee & snack stalls. You can get all types of clothes, Nepali goods, Tibetan goods, embroidered items, incense, and a good selection of jewelry, semiprecious stones, crystals, fancy knives, handicrafts, hammocks, bedspreads, and rings n things at this market. This is the only beach market of Goa. The market is located bang on the land off Anjuna Beach, so it is normal to notice foreign female tourists coming up to the market in their tiny & skimpy two wear swimsuits and doing their shopping for the day.

Anjuna Flea Market is a sunrise to sunset open air market. The market starts business in the first week of October and ends around the first week of May just before the oncoming rains. There are also several people who sell the latest techno tapes, and there are good places to eat Indian, Israeli, or Western food. There are Ayurvedic doctors, professional hair cutters and color appliers (foreigners), dreadlocks makers, and nose and body piercers. You can have your hair cut and painted in any style imaginable. You can also have different designs painted on your body which look like tattoos, but which last only a few weeks.
